Thursday 15th February

At this romantic time of year we invite you to our Valentine's Ball - whether single or not, a good old fashioned Ceilidh is the best way to swing your partner and even meet a partner! They had it right back in the day - their version of "speed dating" was a quick ol' Doh-si-doh.. none of this algorithmic matching nonsense... and if we look carefully at a lot of the old dances, they were all about dancing with everyone in the room... coincidence? We think not!

Question 1: Is this a dating night then? Answer: No, but ceilidhs/barn dances involve lots of dances where you change partner, so they're spot on for a Valentine's themed dance. It's exactly this type of dance that Cut A Shine are trying to revive - partner dancing. For Valentine's we will focus on a set of (easy) dances that involve lots of partner swapping and funny moves, so don't be shy in asking someone for a dance - you will always end up dancing with lots of partners in the room!

Question 2: Is this event heteronormative? Answer: No! we try not to be, but a lot of these really old dances are gendered... so there is a massive ol' preamble to take into account in that sometimes callers may use gentleman and ladies to refer to opposites in the couples, but it's up to the dancers to choose which gender they want to assume for any particular dance. It's simply our job as the band and caller to get everyone up and dancing! Members of the LGBTQI community are most welcome at our dances, and as above, the aim of the event will be to have everyone dancing with everyone else regardless of gender or age or ability. We want to emphasise that there is so much partner swapping built in to these dances that everyone should be confident to ask anyone for a dance, as the partner you start with might not be the one you end up dancing with...

Come one, come all, to our Valentine's Ball, regardless of age, ability, gender or sexual orientation, we are going to party like it 1854, everyone dancing with everyone with love and respect for all... it's a community dance, which we hope will be cool.
